Recently I was assigned with a new web site project. This web site project has its potential of growth in the future. So the client may want to add up more features to it in every milestone. This web project is focused on a popular market brand “Amway”. There are tons of products related and lots of stories and articles to be published and maintained. Thus I decided to go for PHP CMS system instead of building everything from beginning. Framework may prove to be helpful creating the project, however, it still requires a lot of work.
After some comparison between two famous framework Drupal and Joomla, I decide to go with Joomla for this particular project. The main difference between these two frameworks is that Drupal requires more coding experience and is more suitable for developers; and Joomla on the other hand, it can guarantee that user without any programming experience can build up the website from simplicity to complexity with ease. Both of these two frameworks have a lot of plug-ins and templates to support the development. According to the limited time I have to build up the site and meet the deadline, I chose Joomla to be the tool to express my creativity.
There are quite a few Joomla tutorial videos on Youtube. One of the best is this : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SNnpr2BuSZg&feature=list_related&playnext=1&list=SP71895742412B52BE . This Youtube Video list goes through all basic detail about building the site by Joomla’s administration page. It was quite easy to follow, and after some sample set-up, I was able to create simple site with multiple article categories and menu navigation.
As a developer, of course, I am not just site there and do what administration page provides to do. After I build up the basic structure of the web site, the immediate task for developer is to customize the default template to make better and desired look of the web site. I copied and renamed a default template, and started to work on the css and images to alter the look of the site. It was quite straight forward by using Firebug to inspect element of the web page to discover the css code and its original css file.
After some coding work, I changed logo, color of the main themes, text color and etc. And test site for Amway Project is now located at:
For the future development, I understand, as a developer, that I should get started with custom plug-in design in order to make the web site look the way I want it to be. It was fun to create stuff fast based on the great tool available out there; and it will be more fun if we can get it done with advanced way of programming.
